"I've Been in Cybersecurity for 30 Years" Beats "I Used to Think…" Every Single Time.

Our AI loves a self-deprecating opener. A rhetorical question. A little "here's the thing." The humans whose names go on the byline keep replacing all of it with one thing: credentials. Turns out authority doesn't do throat-clearing.

Here's a small, specific thing our edit data caught that turned into one of the most useful rules we have.

When the AI drafts a thought-leadership post for an executive — a LinkedIn piece, a bylined opinion, the kind of thing meant to make a serious person look like a serious person — it almost always opens the same way. With charm. "I used to think case studies were just marketing fluff." "Confession: I'm not a numbers person." A rhetorical question. A relatable little stumble before the real point.

And the executives — or the people writing in their voice — deleted it. Reliably. Then they replaced it with something blunt: "I've been in cybersecurity for 30 years." "I've watched three market cycles eat companies that ignored this." A credential. An anchor. Authority, stated plainly, in the first seven words.

We logged enough of these swaps that the pattern became a rule. And the rule says something true about who actually reads executive content.

The AI's instinct — the relatable, self-deprecating, slightly vulnerable opener — is optimized for a consumer audience. It's the voice of a creator trying to be likeable to strangers scrolling past. It lowers the status of the speaker to build rapport. And for a lifestyle brand or a personality account, that can work great.

But thought leadership isn't talking to strangers. It's talking to peers. A 30-year cybersecurity executive is writing for other people who've been in the trenches, for buyers evaluating whether this person actually knows what they're talking about, for journalists deciding whether to quote them as an expert. That audience doesn't want to be charmed. It wants to know, in the first sentence, why it should keep reading you instead of the other fourteen people posting about the same thing today.

Self-deprecation reads as charming when you've already established authority. It reads as uncertainty when you haven't. And an opener is, by definition, before you've established anything. So leading with "I used to think I wasn't qualified to have an opinion on this" — even as a rhetorical setup — spends your credibility before you've banked any. The expert reader's instinct is to agree: okay, maybe you're not. Next post.

"I've been doing this for 30 years" does the opposite. It banks the credibility first, in public, and then everything after it inherits that authority. Now the contrarian take lands as hard-won experience instead of a hot take. Now the vulnerability, if you want some later, reads as a confident person choosing to be candid — which is charming — rather than a nervous person hedging.

This is a grounding problem, in the Grounded Hallucinations sense. The AI hallucinates a persona — a generically likeable internet voice — because it doesn't know who's actually speaking or who's actually listening. Grounding it means anchoring the post in this specific person's real authority and this specific audience's real expectations. Same craft as everything else we do: take the imaginative draft, tether it to the truth of who the speaker is.

The rule we give the system now: open with the credential, not the confession. Earn the right to be charming. Authority first, personality second.
